According to the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB), European Green Power demand increased by 39% within a year.
The statistics show a growing trend of individuals buying renewable electricity with Guarantees of Origin, rather than opting for a standard ‘grey’ power option.
Guarantees of Origin confirm that consumed energy is 100% renewable, and can be used by businesses to ensure their sustainability credentials are correct.
Managing Director of renewable solutions company ECOHZ, Tom Lindberg believes that this indicates that consumers are tired of waiting and would rather pay a premium to push through renewable, clean energy solutions. Something that should send a strong signal to governments and businesses Europe-wide.
Mr Lindberg stated: “The total demand for green power continues to grow – both in more mature markets like Germany and Sweden, as well as in newly established markets like Spain.”
“European households and businesses continue to show they are dead serious about the renewable energy transition.”
Biomass power across the continent doubled over the year reaching 45TWh with Wind power rising to 90TWh. Germany has already committed to purchasing 77TWh of renewable energy, documented with Guarantees of Origin.
Spain entered into the Guarantees of Origin market in 2015 and increased its solar output sharply from 1.9TWh to 21.4TWh in 2016.
