The University of Manchester has published a report that claims that fracking is the 3rd worst form of electricity generation and one of the least sustainable.
The report which ranks nine methods of generation including nuclear, natural gas, coal, liquified natural gas, hydro, wind, solar and biomass.
The report states that currently, the greenest electricity generation options are solar and wind.
Researchers at the university believe that for fracking to become the most sustainable and green option, it would need to increase its employment capability by 16 times and reduce its impact on the environment by 329 times.
To come to their conclusions, the researchers used a number of factors such as environmental pollution, electricity costs, job creation and public perceptions.
Despite ongoing public opinion on fracking, the UK government maintains that drilling for shale gas can provide increased jobs, energy security and growth.
Professor Adisa Azapagic from the School of Chemical Engineering & Analytical Science, stated: “Many countries are considering the exploitation of shale gas but its overall sustainability is disputed.”
