Should I get an automated meter reader for my business gas?

At Crown Gas and Power, we are encouraging our customers to have Automated Meter Readers (AMR) installed. For some high consuming premises, this is actually a mandatory requirement. If you consume more than 732,000 kWh of gas per year, then we are obliged to install an AMR. Once installed an AMR will not only ensure that you have accurate monthly bills but also allow you to take control of your energy usage. By logging onto the customer portal you can view and download your energy data over a period of time. With this information to hand you may be able to make energy savings at certain times of the day. So yes, you should get an automated meter reader!

What is an Automated Meter Reader (AMR)?

An Automated Meter Reader (AMR) is a device which is simply clipped into most modern gas meters by an attending engineer. In many cases this can be done without the need of the engineer having to turn off your gas supply. Some older meters may need to be upgraded to support this technology, although we will let you know if this is the case before we confirm any works with you.

The AMR records the amount of gas which passes through your meter and then securely transmits this data to us using the same technology that supports mobile phones. We then use this data to provide you with an accurate gas bill.

How do I arrange for an Automated Meter Reader installation

As part of our service offering we will enroll you onto our AMR programme as soon as you switch your supply to us. Alternatively you can contact our customer experience team directly and they will put you in touch with one of our metering specialists who will organise the AMR installation.

The Automated Meter Reader Installation process

For all installations we require a site contact name and contact telephone and/or email address. It usually takes up to 60 days to complete the AMR installation process. This varies based on the size of your gas meter and your gas consumption. Click on the above link to walk through the general installation process: Although AMRs generally provides us with accurate reading data, we do encourage customers to provide us with a meter reading every so often so that we can verify that we are obtaining accurate reading data.
