What is Green Gas?
We offer something pretty unique in the energy sector – green gas for your business.
Green Gas or Biomethane is a type of gas that can be produced from a number of sources, including grass, landfill waste, and agricultural waste. Biomethane is created, refined and then injected into the gas grid by green gas producers. Green Gas can be used as a substitute for natural gas as it has the same characteristics and specifications as fossil gas.
In an ideal world, everyone would choose to have 100% green gas, so why hasn’t everyone switched over?
Unfortunately, there’s a limited volume of green gas available in the UK and a growing demand with climate change being a hot topic.
Crown Gas & Power now offer a range of green gas products to suit every budget.
How is Green Gas made?
Green Gas is created from a natural process called anaerobic digestion whereby organic material is converted into biomethane. This anaerobic digestion process is done by allowing bacteria to break down the organic material in an oxygen-free environment.
Green gas can be made from a number of biodegradable materials and the process for each differs slightly. Once the anaerobic digestion is complete, the CO2 is then removed and subject to meeting gas quality requirements gets injected into the national grid. This can then be used in existing gas appliances across the UK.
The number of green gas plants in the UK has risen from just one in 2013 to over 300 now, 60 of which are feeding directly into the grid. As this continues to grow, some expect over 95% of all domestic demand to be fulfilled by green gas by 2035.
Benefits of Green Gas
Virtually Carbon Neutral
When we extract and burn gas from fossil fuels, we’re reintroducing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that has been locked away for millions of years causing climate damage but biomethane is produced from organic materials that absorbed carbon dioxide while they grew. This means when green gas is burned, it only releases that same amount of carbon dioxide. Since it doesn’t add more CO2 to the earth’s atmosphere, it’s a carbon-neutral.
Supports British Farmers and our Rural Economy
Green gas can provide long-term financial security for British farmers by creating new opportunities, a fresh alternative to dairy and meat production which also accounts for 60% of farming’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Reduces our reliance on fossil fuel gas
It’s no secret that we’re very quickly depleting the earth of its natural fossil fuel collection. While we have animal waste, agricultural crops, food waste and… well, grass, green gas is a very sustainable alternative.
All green gas is tracked from production to consumption. The Green Gas Certification Scheme currently governs the process and allows you to view your certificate and find out more information such as the location and method of extraction.
How to purchase Green Gas for your business?
We have made it easy for you to purchase green gas, simply choose your percentage of biomethane; 25%, 50% or 100% green gas and give us a call today on 0161 762 7744 for some prices.
Crown Gas & Power’s green gas product is not to be confused with carbon offsetting. Rather than compensating for high carbon emissions, biomethane actually reduces emissions.
Why you would want to purchase green gas for your business?
Crown Gas & Power offer biomethane products to suit every budget.
We understand not every budget can accommodate 100% green gas but that shouldn’t rule out businesses from wanting to make a change.
Make a contribution with our 25% or 50% green gas products.
We source all our green gas from within the UK, supporting local farms and helping our economy.
Your certificate will show which UK farm your green gas was sourced from.
Green Gas FAQ’s
Where do you source your Green Gas?
Our Green Gas is purchased across multiple locations, however is ALWAYS in the UK. When you purchase Green gas your certificate will show where yours was bought from.
Why is Green Gas more expensive?
Green Gas is a new process and is still maturing everyday which does mean there is a slight premium. This was why we created the blended product to allow companies to choose either a 25% or 50% blend to accommodate all budgets, while still supporting the UK innovative’s approach to a greener world.
When do I receive my Green Gas certificate?
We aim to send out our certificates within 3 weeks of coming live.
What's the difference between biomethane and Green Gas?
They’re the same thing – Biomethane is the technical term for the gas produced whereas Green Gas has almost become the nickname.
Do I need to change my boiler for green gas?
Absolutely no changes to your equipment are required to accommodate green gas.
How is Green Gas fed into the gas transmission network?
Traditionally biomethane was captured, stored, and injected into the national grid as a separate process however recently National Grid confirmed a local plant was able to be connected directly to the transmission grid for the first time. See our green gas article here.
We believe we’ll start seeing more plants being connected directly to the grid.
