Why Should My Business Consider SMART/AMR Metering

Since the 5th December 2018, energy suppliers are obligated to take all reasonable steps to install either a SMART or Automated Meter Reader (AMR) device into every UK business before the end of 2020.

Is my business eligible for a SMART Meter?

You will qualify for a smart meter should your gas meter size AND business status meet the criteria described below.

Meter Size
You are eligible for a smart meter if your gas meter has a capacity of 11 cubic meters or less (also known as a “designated premise”). If your premise does not qualify as a “designated premise” then the only option currently available for you is an AMR metering solution. If you are not sure if you are a “designated premise” then you can contact us for more information.

Business Status
If you are a Micro Business Customer (that means if your business consumes less than 293,000kWh of gas per year or, you have less than 10 employees and have an annual turnover/balance sheet of less than €2 million Euros), then you will qualify for a new SMART meter. 

If you are not a Micro Business Customer as stated above then you can choose between either a SMART or AMR metering solution.

What is the difference between SMART and AMR Metering?

SMART Meters use a Home Area Network that works just like your Wi-Fi at home. A communications hub allows for two-way communication between your meter and your supplier, allowing both to send and receive information.
AMR Meters use SMS technology just like your mobile phone. This technology allows the AMR to send meter read information directly to your gas supplier only.
